The keys to restorative sleep

Sleep is essential to achieving balance and plays a crucial role in both physical and mental well-being. It's not always easy, however, to get a good night's sleep in summer, what with all the changes in rhythm and warmer temperatures. L'Occitane shares its advice to help you drift off easily and sleep soundly.

Key # 1: find your rhythm

After a busy day, sleep helps you to recover: your skin regenerates, your muscles relax and your mind becomes calm. All this happens provided that you adopt good habits, such as a fixed bedtime to favour harmonious sleep cycles. Although everybody's needs differ in this respect, adults are generally advised to sleep for around 7 hours a night.

Tip: hit the sack as soon as you feel the first signs of fatigue, such as yawning and heavy eyelids. Need a helping hand? Breathing in the delicate scent of Aromachologie Relaxing Essential Oil Blend, with its essential oils, will quickly usher you into dreamland.

Key # 2: prepare for bedtime

Like living in the fast lane? It's important to slow down your pace as night falls to prepare you for a good night's sleep. Opt for an early dinner, around two hours before bed, and make it a light one, since heavy meals tend to upset digestion. While doing sport is the perfect way to eliminate tension during the day, now is the time to make room for calmer activities. Read a good book or do some yoga. This will relax your body and mind.

Tip: avoid stimulants such as tea or coffee after 4pm to reduce the risk of insomnia. Opt instead for a soothing herbal tea with verbena or a refreshing glass of milk to help you fall asleep in no time.

Key # 3: prepare your bedroom

Make your nest just right to give yourself the best chance of enjoying a good night's rest. To sleep like a baby, keep the room temperature below 20°C, and cut out any noise and light that might disturb your slumber. And don't forget to ensure your bed is as comfy as possible: change your mattress every 10 years, choose a thermo-regulatory quilt, ergonomic pillows, etc. Get all the details just right!

Tip: air your room half an hour before bedtime to renew the air you'll be breathing in your sleep. Take the opportunity to spritz a little Relaxing Pillow Mist on your pillow to add an extra touch of calm to the atmosphere.

Key # 4: wake up in just the right way

To maintain all the benefits of a good night's rest, taking care over how you wake up is key. Wake yourself up slowly, with soft music and by half-opening the shutters to let in the sunlight. Tips? Try to get up at the same time every day as far as possible. This will set your internal clock perfectly to ensure you start the day full of energy and in a good mood.

Tip: up late the night before? Avoid excessively long lie-ins as these have a tendency to make you more tired. Get up at 10am at the latest and make up for it with a 20 minute nap in the afternoon to help you recover better.
