Why does hair become oily?

Oily hair is most often the result of a scalp producing excess sebum. This sebum is natural and necessary: it protects the hair fibre and contributes to the scalp’s natural balance. But when it’s produced in too large quantities, roots become heavy, hair loses volume and lacks lightness from the day after washing.

Several factors can disrupt this balance: stress, hormonal changes, an unbalanced diet, or unsuitable hair habits such as overly frequent shampooing, which paradoxically stimulates sebum production to compensate for dryness. When roots become oily quickly, hair appears flat in the morning or the scalp feels persistently heavy, these are all signs that a purifying and better-adapted routine is needed.

How to care for oily hair every day?

The aim is to gently purify the scalp without irritating or drying it, which could trigger the opposite effect and increase sebum production. A purifying shampoo gently massaged into the scalp, helps remove excess sebum and impurities. Gradually spacing out washes also helps train the scalp to produce less sebum over time.

For rinsing, conditioner is applied only to lengths and ends, carefully avoiding roots so as not to weigh hair down further. Silicone-fee hair care is also particularly suited to oily hair, as it avoids residue build-up that weighs down roots and speeds up oiliness.
